How well do you know your region?
Almost everyday, I get emails about job openings in the city of Chicago that are somewhat related to education. What often surprises me the most are the educational centers and schools that exist that I have never heard of. These are the ones that are located on side streets or in hospitals or a mom and pop shop.
I often go to their website and to see if they are doing CE programs, and if so, what kind. The institutions and organizations vary in size and type. From as few as 10 people up to hundreds with enrollments ranging from 30 to 10,000+.
Just today, I learned about a university 4 blocks from where I lived for years. 4 BLOCKS! I had never heard of it. I had never seen a sign. But there it is, getting people through school and training.
One of the solutions we offer at SpurCG is our Competitor Canvas, which is designed to help schools understand their competition. Getting surprised by these places I have never heard of is making me look at how to identify more players in the market. How to identify potential new players and where to look for the obscure, unknown institutions I haven’t heard of before. We can be easily lulled in a false sense of familiarity with our local market and competitors. When was the last time you took a fresh look at your competition?
The good thing is there are places out there trying to do what they can to educate and train. Doing their best to help people move up or get a job. It’s refreshing and it makes me feel good about the future of education beyond degrees.
